AT&T 2wire Modem Power Failure

If you live in the U.S. and contract DSL service with AT&T, you might be offered to buy the 2wire DSL mode.

It depends on the 2wire modem but back then it costed about $150 dollars which is a very high price. However, sometimes during a limited time offer or when you newly contract a DSL with AT&T they’ll give you it for free (Just note that they’ll happyly let you into a 2 year contract with them). By the way, pricing for this DSL modem if you buy it brand new is about US$45.00 – $90.00 and for a used one it’ll be around US$15.00 – $70.00 (August 7, 2012)

Anyway, about this power failure, its pretty obvious that this AC adapter is on its way to hell every single minute if you use it 24 hours 365 days a day. It depends on the user but some users get their 2wire AC adapter broken down only in 13 months or some do get it broken down in 18 months.

Just for if when it breaks down, your options are as below.

  • Buy a brand new one from AT&T and send it over to your home.
  • Buy it at your local Radio Shack.
  • Call 2wire and explain about the RIOT act and get a new one for free.
  • Use Sony PSP’s AC adapter.

If you think there’re alternate suggestions, or comments, please write down in the comment area at the bottom.

Just before buying a new one, the current 2wire AC adapter’s specifications are as below:P/N: 1000-500031-000; Part No.: GPUSW0512000GD1S

  • P/N:1000-500031-000
  • PART NO.: GPUSW0512000GD1S
  • INPUT: 100-120Vc.a. 50/60Hz 0.15A
  • OUTPUT: 5.1V DC2A
  • Outer: Minus, Inner:Plus
  • Connectore Name/Type: EIAJ-02EIAJ-02 DC Plug

BTW, haven’t you seen this plug type somewhere?

Its the exact same as the PSP AC Adapter’s plug! PSP’s AC Adapter is DC5V which is 0.1V less than the 2wire AC adapter one but it won’t be a problem.

Some people who think that the genuine "things" are the best just buy the genuine things no matter of how high the prices are. But parts are just parts, and if its an AC adapter what matters is the INPUT voltage and OUTPUT volt and ampare.

If you search the 2wire at google shopping the pricing for the new and used range from US$5.00 to $120.00. Yes, $120.00 is the price of the power adapter only and not the DSL modem itself.! But, you can just use your unused PSP AC Adapter that’s laying around for free. And, even if you buy the PSP AC adapter, its going to be around US$10.00.

Also, the smartphones laying around also utilizes DC5V. Those smartphone AC Adapter’s output ampare ranges from 0.5A to 2A. So if you have a USB adapter with the above EIAJ-02 connector laying around, you can use that also. However, you just have to watch out for the inner and outer plus and minus voltage. Usually, the plus is the inner but some have it opposite.

This is because the USB devices are configured to charge at DC5V 0.5A to 2A and the smartphones and PSPs utilize them also.
